Cooler weather helps control Nebraska wildfires

CHADRON, Neb. (AP) ? Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman says some cooler weather helped firefighters make good progress overnight in their battle against several wildfires in the northwest corner of the state.

But Heineman says it will likely take two or three more days to get the fires near Chadron fully under control. The governor was touring the fire damage on Sunday and meeting with local officials.

He says firefighters are concerned about the Sunday forecast for winds that could spread the fires further than the more than 93 square miles they've already burned. One fire has crossed the state border into South Dakota.

Heineman says Nebraska has had a rough summer of wildfires, and fire will probably remain a threat for at least four to six weeks more because of the dry conditions.
