Stocks surged on Wall Street after Senate leaders reached a deal that would avoid a U.S. default and reopen the government after 16 days of being partially shut down. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose to within four points of the all-time high it reached Sept. 18.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 205.82 points, or 1.4 percent, to close at 15,373.83.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 23.48 points, or 1.4 percent, to 1,721.54.
The Nasdaq composite rose 45.42 points, or 1.2 percent, to 3,839.43.
For the week:
The Dow is up 136.72 points, or 0.9 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 18.34 points, or 1.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 47.56 points, or 1.2 percent.
For the year so far:
The Dow is up 2,269.69 points, or 17.3 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 295.35 points, or 20.7 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 819.92 points, or 27.2 percent.
