LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) ? Arrests have been made in the long-unsolved slayings of five transients who were gunned down in a homeless encampment near a freeway more than three years ago, police said Wednesday.
Police Chief Jim McDonnell scheduled a press conference late Wednesday to discuss the arrests in connection with the fatal shootings of Hamid Shraifat, Frederick Neumeier, Katherine Verdun, Lorenzo Perez Villicana and Vanessa Malaepule in November 2008, a department statement said.
The statement said no details would be released until the press conference.
The announcement comes a day after an Iraq war veteran was charged in nearby Orange County with stabbing to death four homeless men in a weeks-long rampage.
