The Fastest RAM for Your Gaming PC

The Fastest RAM for Your Gaming PCYou just bought the fastest (and most expensive) desktop platform on the planet. Which company's memory will you use to populate Intel's quad-channel controller? We tested four purportedly high-end kits in order to find out which set is the best.

Anyone willing to drop one thousand dollars on a CPU probably wants to match it up to the best possible memory kit, especially armed with the knowledge that Intel's new quad-channel memory controller is located within that CPU. How are we to know which kit is the best, though?

The Fastest RAM for Your Gaming PCWe left it up to manufacturers to decide which quad-channel kit they thought would be best, making it clear that our judgement would be balanced between overclocking, minimum latencies, and capacity.

Corsair Dominator GT CMGTX8

The only premium memory kit in today's round-up containing four 2 GB modules, Corsair's 8 GB DDR3-2400 kit promises top overclocking potential. These two things are probably related, since memory controllers are often capable of being pushed a little harder when paired with lower-density RAM.

As with other Dominator GT memory, the CMGTX8 kit features removable fins and Corsair's DHX Pro connector on each module. The fins can be replaced by parts of alternative size and color or, if you can still find one, the firm's long-discontinued thermoelectric cooler. The DHX Pro connector is designed exclusively to support Corsair's AirFlow Pro temperature and activity display.

Rated at DDR3-2400 CAS 10-12-10-27, the CMGTX8 booted at a mere DDR3-1333 CAS 9 on our Asus P9X79 WS test motherboard. A quick look at the SPD table reveals the reason.

Corsair skipped the now-standard DDR3-1600 C9 defaults in what appears to be an effort to assure the ultimate compatibility, since the lower speed will almost assuredly boot on nearly any board. Data rates lower than DDR3-1066 are no longer needed, since Sandy Bridge-E supplants the only processor architecture left officially constrained to that speed, Gulftown. We're not sure which platforms will treat the 518 MHz value as DDR3-1066, though.

CPU-Z doesn't report the correct frequency for XMP-2400, but our motherboard read it without issue and set the appropriate timings automatically when switched to XMP Profile 1 in its UEFI.

Corsair DRAM carries a non-transferable limited lifetime warranty.

G.Skill RipjawsZ F3-19200CL9Q-16GBZHD

With a model number that's easy to decipher but difficult to remember, G.Skill's PC-19200 CL 9 quad-channel kit is the only 16 GB set in today's round-up to carry a DDR3-2400 rating.

G.Skill says that, apart from its XMP profile, this is the same hardware as found in its DDR3-2200 kit. That made it the perfect product for a surreptitious appearance in our recent X79 motherboard round-up, where it was used as the second set for eight-DIMM overclocking tests.

We were happy to see G.Skill's DDR3-2400 automatically configured at DDR3-1600, but a little disappointed that JEDEC's slowest CAS 11 timings were used. While it is possible that G.Skill was simply seeking the ultimate compatibility, it's been a while since we've seen a "performance" motherboard that didn't support DDR3-1600 CAS 9 at 1.50 V.

Boards that can't use DDR3-1600 by default will find lower SPD values, while those that support XMP will configure the correct DDR3-2400 timings using Profile 1 from UEFI. CPU-Z misreports that value as a data rate of 2286 MHz, but our motherboard had no problem reading it correctly.

G.Skill memory includes a lifetime warranty.

Geil Evo Corsa GOC316GB2133C9AQC

Geil shipped its latest 16 GB quad-channel kit to us before any of its U.S. vendors received shipments. The unfortunate result is that its resellers have different offerings available to our North American readers. Versions of this kit at DDR3-1866 C9 and DDR3-2400 C10 are available here for $150 and $325, but this DDR3-2133 SKU can only be found in Europe (for the equivalent of $260). Reader demand could bring it to our shores, but the existing availability issue means that it's out of the award race.

Our motherboard detects and configures Geil's DDR3-2133 C9 using its DDR3-1600 C9 SPD. This, of course, is bootable at a motherboard's default 1.50 V, and yet Geil is the only company in today's round-up with the guts to add this configuration value.

DDR3-2133 CAS 9-11-9-28 is selectable as Profile 1 from XMP-compatible motherboards.

All Geil memory carries a limited lifetime warranty.

The Fastest RAM for Your Gaming PC

Mushkin Redline 993997

The least-expensive of this comparison's premium RAM, Mushkin's Redline 993997 still packs the punch of a DDR3-2133 rating and a full 16 GB capacity.

We're not certain how Mushkin achieved this pricing feat while using more-expensive heat spreaders than its 16 GB competitors. But we're happy to see that this kit is still as easy to configure as those more-expensive parts. DDR3-2133 CAS 9-11-10-28 is available as XMP Profile 1.

SPD profiles, on the other hand, are far more conservative. So, the best our board could accomplish without enabling XMP was DDR3-1333 CAS 9. Manual configuration is course another (highly recommended) option in this case.

Mushkin provides a non-transferable limited lifetime warranty to the original purchaser of its DRAM products.

Test Setup and Benchmarks

Asus' P9X79 WS won the memory overclocking portion of our recent high-end X79 motherboard comparison, and by doing so earned its place on this test bench.

We wanted to see what effect various memory speeds might have on program performance, and games are one of the types of programs that occasionally show this difference. Nvidia's GeForce GTX 580 is fast enough to keep the pressure on our CPU and GPU.

Intel's Core i7-3960X was locked at 34x throughout testing to keep its clock frequency stable at non-reference base clocks.

The Fastest RAM for Your Gaming PCThe lowest-possible game settings would show the biggest impact of memory performance on frames-per-second, but nobody actually games at those settings. Instead, we selected the lowest settings that high-end buyers would likely use (if forced to do so), along with a couple other applications that have been influenced by memory performance in the past.

Overclocking And Under-Latency Results

Only two of the memory kits in today's round-up are rated at DDR3-2400, while others list DDR3-2133 as their top validated data rate. So how many kits are actually capable of pushing the high mark on our motherboard?

Corsairs 8 GB kit barely exceeded expectations, while RipjawsZ fell slightly below them. In spite of that, G.Skill's kit is still the fastest among 16 GB competitors.

Ergo our caveats, the first of which is that many Sandy Bridge-E-based processors can't reliably run at DDR3-2400. Our first Core i7-3960X wouldn't reach this frequency at any setting, and its replacement is barely any better in this regard (though its higher-attainable core speed does make motherboard testing easier).

The second caveat comes from Asus, which informed us that CPU VCCA (formerly referred to as uncore) voltage probably shouldn't exceed 1.20 V. According to them, some processors lose stability and may even be damaged at higher settings, while others do not or will not. Ours reached the highest memory settings using 1.20 to 1.25 V.

Our third caveat is that different memory firms use different CPU samples to determine the best settings for their own memory, and those settings might not be right for your CPU. Corsair, for example, included VCCA of 1.40 V in its XMP profile, but wouldn't overclock well until we dropped it to 1.25 V. Likewise, G.Skill's 1.20 V XMP VCCA worked perfectly with our CPU, but probably wouldn't work well with whatever CPU the folks at Corsair used to dial in their profile.

None of the DDR3-2133 samples include VCCA in their XMP profiles, likely because the CPU's memory controller only needs this adjustment at extremely high data rates.

The Fastest RAM for Your Gaming PCCorsair has the best DDR3-2400 timings, though this is likely a result of its lower-density 8 GB kit. Our CPU sample, hand-picked for its overclocking headroom, couldn't handle the larger, higher-density 16 GB kits at this frequency. That also eliminates any DDR3-2400 performance testing, since we'd need at least two devices to compare.

G.Skill takes over from DDR3-2133 downward, its 16 GB kit pushing 1-cycle lower CAS at every tested frequency, compared to competitors.

DDR3-1600 Memory Performance

One way to boost the overclocking capability of memory is to give it slower secondary and, if possible, tertiary timings. We'd hope that wouldn't hurt performance at lower data rates but, well?

Not interested in causing any panic, we went on to test the gaming performance of each module set. The slowest set in Sandra takes second-place here. Clearly, this platform isn't starved for memory bandwidth, else we'd see a closer correlation between the two sets of tests.

Click here to view application performance results.

Similarly, Corsair ends up in a five-way tie that includes the reference DDR3-1600 CAS 9, with the lowest-latency G.Skill RAM squeaking ahead by a few milliseconds in 3ds Max.

DDR3-1866 Memory Performance

We've seen that Sandra Memory Bandwidth doesn't always reflect the performance differences found in real-world applications, but we're still a little unsettled to find the 8 GB kit so far behind its 16 GB rivals at DDR3-1866. We're left to wonder how much module organization counts here.

Fortunately for Corsair, we again see that Sandra's numbers aren't reflected in real-world benchmarks. The other side of that coin is a realization that faster memory data rates simply do not translate to better performance. Desktop-class applications just don't tax a throughput-heavy quad-channel memory controller.

Click here to view gaming performance results.
Click here to view application performance results.

DDR3-2133 Memory Performance

By now, most readers have noticed that the performance of DDR3-1600 reference memory doesn't change. That's because it's always at DDR3-1600 CAS 9, regardless of the data rate its on-paper competition is running. In this case, everything but the reference memory is operating at DDR3-2133, which should kick performance up a couple notches.

The slowest memory in Sandra actually leads our gaming performance charts, while DDR3-1600 falls noticeably behind only in WinRAR.

Whose Quad-Channel Memory Kit Is The Best?

Corsair wins our overclocking competition, and that should be enough to convince competitive overclockers to take the plunge. Of course, in the real-world, you have to remember that it takes stepping down to an 8 GB kit to achieve those marginally-higher data rates. The rest of the field sports 16 GB, and we have to imagine that most buyers will be inclined to buy larger kits for expensive Sandy Bridge-E-based platforms.

Going the 8 GB route is an option, of course, if you're building on a budget. If that's the case, though, Corsair's premium is going to put it out of reach. Again, this one's probably best suited to the competitive overclocking circuit.

So, how do we define superiority in a market were people are willing to pay 100% more to get 10% better performance? Certainly we can't make a decision based on price alone.

After all, the second-fastest G.Skill kit has twice the capacity, and anyone who wants to argue price can point out that the 100% increase in capacity comes at a mere 26% increase in cost.

But consider also that Mushkin came up only 9 MHz-not nine percent-lower in maximum data rate. In other words, we got 99.6% of the most-expensive kits clock speed for only 33% the price. And for those who prefer not to split hairs, 99.6% rounds up.

Today's competition was presented as a complement to our recent high-end X79 Express motherboard round-up for the folks willing to spend top-dollar on Intel's Core i7-3000-series processors. The goal was to root out the best memory kit to go with Sandy Bridge-E's quad-channel memory controller, and it turns out that we have two bests. Corsair's Dominator GT CMGTX8 8 GB quad-channel kit reached the highest frequency, while G.Skill's RipjawsZ was the best overclocker among 16 GB kits. But mimicking (if not duplicating) the top 16 GB kits achievement at one-third of its price makes Mushkin's Redline 993997 the kit we'd recommend to our friends.

'US reassures wary Israel over Saudi fighter jet deal'

Officials in the United States have sought to reassure Israel that the $29.4 billion sale of fighter jets to Saudi Arabia will boost Israeli security in the region, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

According to the report, Assistant Secretary of State for Political Military Affairs Andrew Shapiro told Israel from Washington that the sale, which includes 84 new F-15 fighter jets, will not affect Israel's "qualitative military edge."

US grand jury indicts two men in Saudi envoy plot

The United States was confident that the Saudi purchase would benefit Israeli security by "bolstering moderate allies in the Gulf," especially in light of Israel and the Gulf country's shared beliefs about the need to curb the influence of Iran.

Officials in Jerusalem have not officially responded to the sale.

The United States announced Thursday that it will sell $29.4 billion in fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, in a deal the White House said would support more than 50,000 jobs and help reinforce regional security in the Gulf amid mounting tension with Iran.

The sale covers 84 new Boeing F-15 fighters with advanced radar equipment and digital electronic warfare systems plus upgrades of 70 older F-15s as well as munitions, spare parts, training, maintenance and logistics.

While the sale was previously okayed by Congress, the White House announcement comes at a moment of rising tensions in the Gulf region.

Both the United States and Saudi Arabia, which sees Iran as a significant potential threat, are worried over Iran's nuclear program. Iranian officials this week repeated threats to close the Strait of Hormuz in response to mounting US and European economic sanctions.

The sale also comes as President Barack Obama prepares to accelerate his campaign for reelection in November 2012, a campaign likely to be fought over the US economy and job growth.

A White House spokesman said the Saudi arms sales would give the US economy a $3.5 billion annual boost and help bolster exports and jobs.

The Obama administration cleared with Congress more than a year ago the potential sale of more than $60 billion of military hardware to Saudi Arabia over 10 to 15 years, including the F-15s, helicopters and related equipment and services.

The Saudi buildup, part of a wider US buildup of its regional friends and allies, could help offset the departure this month of the last US combat troops in Iraq.

In a statement released in Honolulu, where Obama is vacationing, White House deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said the kingdom had an important role to play in keeping watch over the region, which has also seen protests and political turmoil in Yemen.

China urges tighter Internet security after series of data leaks (Reuters)

SHANGHAI (Reuters) ? The Chinese government is working with domestic Internet search engines like Baidu Inc and Sohu.com and financial institutions to prevent phishing attacks on unsuspecting Chinese web users.

The Ministry of Public Security said on Friday it would work with 10 Chinese search engines to protect the website rankings of financial institutions to lessen the chances that Internet users will be duped by phishing websites.

A phishing attack occurs when the user is persuaded to part with his or her username and password via a fake webpage that closely resembles the original.

Through the collaboration, the official websites of several Chinese banks, such as Agricultural Bank of China and China Construction Bank will be ranked first in the search engine when a user searches for the related keywords, reducing the risk of such attacks, the Ministry said in an online circular on Friday.

The move comes after China urged tighter Internet security on Wednesday following a spate of personal data leaks that alarmed the online community and prompted calls for tougher scrutiny of who has access to online information.

On Thursday, the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department confirmed a technical vulnerability on the website of the Division of Exit and Entry Administrative Department of Public Security for Guangdong had left the personal data of 4.4 million users exposed.

According to Chinese media, the loophole was first reported by a microblogger on Thursday and has been around since June this year.

The province's public security department said the loophole had been fixed.

China claims the most Internet users in the world at 485 million, state media reported last month. Despite widespread censorship and monitoring online, many users have been up in arms about the reported data leaks and their implications.

The user IDs, passwords and email addresses of more than 6 million accounts registered on CSDN -- a site for programmers -- were leaked, Xinhua news agency reported last week, citing an anti-virus software provider that discovered the problem. The popular social-networking site Tianya was also hit.

The Global Times newspaper on Friday described the state of Internet security in China as "very dangerous," saying the leaks had "struck Chinese society's alarm bells."

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said on Wednesday it would investigate the hacking incidents.

"The department believes the recent leak of user information is a serious infringement of the rights of Internet users and threatens Internet safety. The department strongly condemns such behavior," the ministry said in the statement.

China is widely suspected of being the origin of many hacking attacks on government and commercial websites abroad, but officials have repeatedly dismissed reports that the government or military could be behind such attacks.

China bans numerous overseas websites, including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and some foreign media outlets, fearing the uncensored sharing of images and information could cause social instability and harm national security.

'Hunger Games' Hopes And More: 2012 Movie Wish List

MTV Movies team has high hopes for 'The Avengers,' 'Looper' and more.

As we while away the last few days and hours of 2011, looking back upon all the great, unforgettable fare that descended upon our cineplexes this year, we can't help but get excited for what the new year will bring us.

We might not get another "Harry Potter," but there's a lot coming down the pike to fill the void: a new "Alien"-esque film in "Prometheus," the gritty and ruthless "Hunger Games," the superhero spectacle "The Avengers," and a brand new Batman, via "The Dark Knight Rises." Here's a brief rundown of what we hope delivers on the hype and makes our "Best of 2012" lists this time next year.

A Successful "Avengers" Assembly
I have a lot of high hopes for movies in 2012. I need "Prometheus" to be as awesome as it appears to be, and Christopher Nolan has to send Batman off in style, but perhaps my biggest concern comes in the form of "The Avengers." Bringing Earth's Mightiest Heroes together under one cinematic roof is a lofty idea, and one that could easily explode in Marvel's face. A successful "Avengers" would mean ambitious, world-building films that extend across multiple franchises can exist. An "Avengers" that fails both critically and commercially is nothing short of a gut shot for comics on the big screen. Too much effort and passion, both from filmmakers and fans, has been put into "The Avengers" over the past few years. Marvel absolutely has to get it right ... and I've got all my fingers, toes and what-have-you's crossed that they will. - Josh Wigler

Taylor Kitsch Solidifies His Movie-Star Status
Fans of the dearly departed drama "Friday Night Lights" know Taylor Kitsch as big Tim Riggins, the football-playing, bad-boy-with-a-big-heart from Dillon, Texas. But if you've never spent four quarters with the state champion Panthers, you may not be well-acquainted with Kitsch's sizeable acting chops (and even bigger biceps). After all, his big-screen turns ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine," "The Bang Bang Club") haven't left such an indelible mark as his TV alter ego. But that could (and should) all change in 2012, as the 30-year-old headlines two big-budget popcorn flicks: Disney's "John Carter" and the boardgame-cum-potential-blockbuster "Battleship." Here's hoping clear eyes and full hearts really can't lose. - Amy Wilkinson

"The Hunger Games" Takes Out "Twilight"
The end of the "Twilight" film franchise is bittersweet. We'll miss our favorite vampires and werewolves, but 2012 marks the arrival of a new franchise that deserves just as much attention and adoration as Stephenie Meyer's fangtastic fantasyland. "The Hunger Games" is not "Twilight" and shouldn't ever be compared as such, but it deserves that blockbuster status. This is a story about survival, self-reliance and discovery, with a female protagonist who is strong, resilient, independent, intelligent and real. In short, Suzanne Collins' creation has everything modern youth-targeted fiction lacks. I pray to the movie powers for Gary Ross' big-screen adaptation to be the biggest success story of the year and that the fan fervor for the "Games" doubles that of "Twilight." - Kara Warner

Luck For "Looper"
Looking ahead to 2012, it's impossible to not stop in awe when considering the sheer number of blockbusters I can't wait to see. This is "stars aligning" material. We're talking Batman, Bilbo and Bond, but if I have my way, people will turn out in droves to see a movie they probably haven't heard of yet: Rian Johnson's "Looper." A sci-fi/crime movie hybrid, "Looper" takes place in the near future where mobsters send their enemies back in time where waiting hitmen finish the job. In the film, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis play the younger and older versions of the same character, and if that and the story don't completely sell it, I'm afraid you're lost, my friend. Test screenings left critics raving, and Johnson has made consistently interesting work since his indie debut "Brick." If there is any justice at the movies, people will see "Looper." - Kevin Sullivan

(AP) ? North Korea's next leader escorted his father's hearse in an elaborate state funeral on a bitter, snowy day Wednesday, bowing and saluting in front of tens of thousands of citizens who wailed and stamped their feet in grief for Kim Jong Il.

Son and successor Kim Jong Un was head mourner on the gray day in Pyongyang, walking with one hand on the black hearse that carried his father's coffin on its roof, his other hand raised in salute, his head bowed against the wind.

At the end of the 2 1/2-hour procession, rifles fired 21 times as Kim Jong Un stood flanked by the top party and military officials who are expected to be his inner circle of advisers. Kim then saluted again as goose-stepping soldiers carrying flags and rifles marched by.

Although analysts say Kim Jong Un is on the path toward cementing his power and all moves in North Korea so far ? from titles giving him power over the ruling party and military and his leading position in the funeral procession ? point in that direction, his age and inexperience leave questions about Kim's long-term prospects. Whereas his father was groomed for power for 20 years before taking over, the younger Kim has had only about two years.

He also faces the huge challenges of running a country that struggles to feed its people even as it pursues a nuclear weapons program that has earned it international sanctions and condemnation.

Kim Jong Il ? who led with absolute power after his father Kim Il Sung's death in 1994, through a famine that killed hundreds of thousands and the pursuit of nuclear and missile programs ? died of a heart attack Dec. 17 at age 69.

Mourners in parkas lined the streets of Pyongyang, waving, stamping and crying as the convoy bearing his coffin passed. Some struggled to get past security personnel holding back the crowd.

"How can the sky not cry?" a weeping soldier standing in the snow said to state TV. "The people ... are all crying tears of blood."

The dramatic scenes of grief showed how effectively North Korea built a personality cult around Kim Jong Il despite chronic food shortages and decades of economic hardship.

A large challenge for North Korea's propaganda apparatus will be "to counter the public's perception that the new leader is a spoiled child of privilege," said Brian Myers, an expert on North Korean propaganda at Dongseo University in Busan, South Korea.

"Having Kim Jong Un trudge mournfully next to the hearse in terrible weather was a very clever move," Myers said.

Even as North Koreans mourned the loss of the second leader the nation has known, the transition of power to Kim Jong Un was well under way. The young man, who is in his late 20s, is already being hailed by state media as the "supreme leader" of the party, state and army.

Kim wore a long, dark overcoat as he strode alongside his father's hearse accompanied by top party officials behind him and key military leaders on the other side of the limousine ? a lineup that was a good look at who will be the core leadership in North Korea.

North Korea now turns to Thursday's memorial ceremony. Although there will be tributes to Kim Jong Il, the country will be turning toward Kim Jong Un, analysts said.

"The message will be clear: Kim Jong Un now leads the country and there is no alternative," said Kim Yeon-su, a North Korea expert at the state-run Korea National Defense University in South Korea.

There will also be more attention paid to the inner circle forming around Kim Jong Un.

On Wednesday, he was accompanied by Jang Song Thaek, Kim Jong Il's brother-in-law and a vice chairman of the powerful National Defense Commission, who is expected to be crucial in helping Kim Jong Un take power.

Also escorting the limousine were military chief Ri Yong Ho and People's Armed Forces Minster Kim Yong Chun. Their presence indicates they will be important players as the younger Kim consolidates his leadership. Top Workers' Party officials Choe Thae Bok and Kim Ki Nam and senior military officer Kim Jong Gak also took prominent positions.

The early part of Wednesday's funeral ceremony was shrouded in secrecy, as in 1994, when Kim Il Sung died. Back then, Kim Jong Il and top officials held a private, hourlong ceremony inside the Kumsusan palace before the procession through the city, according to his official biography.

Pyongyang's foreign diplomats were invited to attend the procession, though few other outsiders appeared to be allowed into the country for the funeral. One foreign diplomat in Pyongyang, who asked not to be named because of the sensitive nature of her work, said funereal music played and people wept as the convoy left Kumsusan followed by a large number of vehicles and army jeeps.

After showing taped footage of mourners and documentaries of Kim Jong Il, state TV began airing the procession, showing cars moving slowly through the snowy city, led by a limousine carrying a huge portrait of a smiling Kim Jong Il.

Wednesday's procession had a stronger military presence than 1994.

Kim Jong Il, who ushered in a "military first" era when he took power, celebrated major occasions with lavish, meticulously choreographed parades designed to show off the nation's military might, such as the October 2010 display when he introduced his son to the world.

Kim Jong Un was made a four-star general and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party last year.

After the funeral, the young Kim is expected to solidify his power by formally assuming command of the 1.2 million-strong military, and becoming general secretary of the Workers' Party and chairman of the party's Central Military Commission, said Yoo Ho-yeol, a professor at Korea University in South Korea.

Kim Jong Il's two other sons, Kim Jong Nam and Kim Jong Chol, were not spotted at the procession.

Iraqi al Qaeda group says behind Baghdad bombings (Reuters)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? Al Qaeda's affiliate in Iraq has claimed responsibility for a slew of bombings that killed at least 71 people in Baghdad last week, a group that monitors online communication among insurgents said Tuesday.

A suicide car bomber and multiple roadside bombs hit Baghdad's mainly Shi'ite areas on December 22 in the first attacks on the capital since U.S. troops withdrew from Iraq on December 18.

In a sign of growing tensions within the government itself, Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has ordered the arrest of Sunni Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi and asked parliament to fire Sunni Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq.

The U.S.-based SITE Intelligence Group said the Islamic State of Iraq, an umbrella group for al Qaeda-linked insurgents, had claimed responsibility for the attacks in a statement posted on Islamist websites Monday.

ISI said it had carried out the attacks in support of Sunni prisoners. "The operations were distributed between targeting security headquarters, military patrols...and eliminating the heads of unbelief from amongst the security, military and administration leaders of the Green Zone (Iraqi) government," it was quoted by SITE as saying.

In Thursday's single biggest attack, at least 18 people were killed when an attacker driving an ambulance detonated the vehicle near a government criminal investigation office in Baghdad's central Karrada district.

Hashemi has been formally charged with running death squads targeting Iraqi government and security officials. He has denied all charges which he says were "fabricated."

Overall violence in Iraq has dropped since the peak of sectarian fighting in 2006-07 but bombings and killings still occur almost daily.

Al Qaeda in Iraq has been weakened by deaths of leaders but there are fears the group will try to regroup and strengthen its presence following the withdrawal of U.S. troops almost nine years after the invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

Man United routs Wigan

LONDON (AP) -Manchester United flourished as Manchester City floundered on Monday to wipe out its neighbor's lead in the Premier League title race.

City's was left clinging to top spot on goal difference after its expensively assembled attacking unit failed to score in the league for the first time this season in a 0-0 draw at West Bromwich Albion.

Injury-hit United took full advantage, with Dimitar Berbatov's hat trick powering the champions to a second 5-0 rout in a week against Wigan.

"We're really hitting good form now and there's a real goal threat about us from all departments," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "If we're top of the league or joint top with City by New Year's Day I'll be happy."

Combined with Wednesday's 5-0 thrashing of Fulham, United seems to have shaken off its early Champions League exit earlier this month.

"It was a wake-up call because maybe everyone looked at themselves in the mirror and said, 'We can do much better,"' United defender Patrice Evra said. "What the fans expect of every player, we are doing now."

City and United are 10 points ahead of third-place Tottenham, which plays the first of two games in hand at Norwich on Tuesday.

Chelsea is a point further back in fourth and has all but given on up on its title hopes after Fulham condemned its west London rival to a third consecutive 1-1 draw.

Liverpool, three points behind Chelsea in sixth, failed to seize on Chelsea's slip-up, drawing 1-1 at home to bottom-place Blackburn.

Almost halfway through the season, the title race looks more and more like a two-horse race, although City is starting to show signs of weaknesses after setting a record for the best start ever to a Premier League campaign.

Mario Balotelli struck the top of the crossbar from 30 yards (meters) at the start of the second half having already had a goal disallowed when he volleyed home only to see an offside flag raised.

Lacking their usual bite, the leaders were frustrated by the hosts, who also hit the goal frame through Jerome Thomas.

"We know it is maybe impossible to stay at the top for 38 games but we will try," City manager Roberto Mancini said. "Maybe if we scored in the first half we would have scored two or three goals."

United achieved even more than that, as Park Ji-sung took just eight minutes to put his team in front, picking a spot in the top right of the net after being picked out by Evra's cutback.

United took full advantage of Wigan's Conor Sammon being sent off for fouling Michael Carrick, with Berbatov - on his second start of the season - holding off Antolin Alcaraz before netting his first of the day.

United had another injury setback at halftime when it lost Jonny Evans, its only fit center back, with a calf injury that is expected to rule him out for two weeks.

Thankfully for United all the pressure was on the Wigan goal. Berbatov latched onto Antonio Valencia's pass before firing a shot beyond Ali Al Habsi.

Valencia got on the scoresheet himself with a low strike before Berbatov completed his hat trick to make up ground on City in the goal difference stakes.

After Park was fouled by Alcaraz, substitute Wayne Rooney allowed Berbatov to net a third from the penalty spot.

"If we win and score goals and keep many clean sheets, like we did tonight, we're going to be at the top of the league at the end of the season," Evra said.

While United's focus is on a 20th league title, Chelsea's is just staying in the four Champions League places.

Juan Mata had put Chelsea in front at the start of the second half, but Clint Dempsey equalized with only Fulham's fifth away goal this season.

At the bottom of the table, Blackburn nudged closer to its relegation rivals by earning a point at Liverpool.

Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam put the ball into his own net on the stroke of halftime after a corner from Morten Gamst Pedersen to give Blackburn a surprising lead.

Maxi Rodriguez spared Liverpool from embarrassment after the break with his 11th goal in his last 12 starts. But even the return of captain Steven Gerrard after a two-month absence with an ankle injury as a second-half substitute couldn't inspire Liverpool to salvage a victory.

Blackburn is just a point behind Bolton, which lost 2-0 to a Newcastle side that had not won in six matches.

Sunderland climbed four points clear of the danger zone with a 1-1 draw at Everton.

Record Sales In Japan Push 3DS Past 4 Million Mark

Nintendo has now sold over 4 million 3DSes in Japan, moving a record high of more than half a million units last week, as two of its games became million-sellers. Earlier this year, the portable suffered lagging sales to due to expensive pricing and a dearth of compelling titles. Many believed the popularity of smartphone gaming and these initial launch woes would prevent the 3DS from matching even a sizable fraction of the original DS's ...

IMEC working with holograms, mirrored pixels to prevent 3D movie headaches

Let's face it, 3D movies are amazing but there are times when you'll walk away with a killer headache. A group of researchers at IMEC believes that holographic video might be the best way around this problem and has been working on a means of constructing holographic displays by shining lasers on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) platforms capable of moving up and down like small, reflective pistons. Here's the cool part: each pixel would have a spring-like mechanism attached to it that could be moved by applying voltage to it. In the first stage of the technology, a laser is bounced off a MEMS-less chip containing an image, the diffracted light interfering to create a 3D picture. From here, the team can adjust the image by replacing pixels with small, mirrored platforms that can alternate their direction to create a moving projection. It gets technical after this, but you can take a gander at the video after the break for a full demo and explanation.
