The Healthy Gay Marriage | Love-Life Learning Center

The contemporary objective for gay and lesbian couples seeking marriage is to create a healthy gay marriage in what has been until now a largely heterosexual institution. Before delving into this topic it is important for interested readers to realize that some gay persons have been living as ?married? couples long before gay marriage became legalized. These individuals created a commitment to ?marry? based solely upon a ?promise? of love. This commitment of love as the true foundation of marriage is available to any two persons in love regardless of gender.

In this post I will explore the various psychological issues that can interfere with or complicate a homosexual marriage at this point in the history of our society. The first is the continued existence of ?closet thinking? in some gay and lesbian persons. This basically means that some gay people are still ?hiding? the facts of their homosexuality to avoid some perceived threat.

Closeted individuals are usually expecting some kind of rejection or negative judgment if they are discovered to be homosexuals by heterosexual persons in their personal and work lives. The bigger danger being the judgment the individual is passing on him or herself. It should be pretty obvious that a closeted gay person would have significant difficulty being in a committed love and married. There is a certain amount of freedom required to be in love. In love you have to be able to be yourself in a relationship, to give and receive love openly without conflicts.

Many people come out of closets (assuming there are all kinds of closets) when they have to. It?s common for a person to outgrow a closet and experience a crisis making the transition into more public acknowledgment. Making this change is difficult at first until you realize how limited closeted living really was and how unrealistic the fears are. Most ?closet liberations??result in better love-lives, more freedom of thought, feeling, and action, as well as a better sense of self. All qualities that make for a better spouse.

Next on our list of issues that interfere with a healthy gay marriage are the negative beliefs some gay persons have about the stability and durability (otherwise endurance) of gay love relationships. They think of gay love relationships as short-term, overly sexed?(or physical), and for the most part turbulent. Descriptions like loving, committed, loyal, and long-term are unexpected by these individuals. Promiscuity is the norm with multiple partners. The troubling part is the potential for a self-fulfilling prophesy and possibility these beliefs are defending against underlying fears.

I have come to understand that there is a certain creative power involved in the act of believing something. Even more so if you are convinced that something is true. If you don?t expect much from a gay love relationship, chances are you won?t get much from any gay love relationship you find. Now the reason for this could be as simple as finding the same lovers who can?t or won?t commit over and over again. Or you could be so convinced the relationship will go bad, that the relationship is pretty much engineered to fall apart. However it goes, the underlying expectation of limitation and trouble is at work creating the difficulty you are so convinced will happen.

Some people I have treated kept their ?gay relations? specifically to sexual encounters with anonymous men or women. Otherwise they stayed to themselves or kept heterosexual relationships going in public while practicing anonymous homosexual encounters in private. Some insisting on leaving town to relieve sexual tensions ?more safely? with anonymous lovers somewhere else.

Obviously this kind of fearful and fragmented love-life would surely interfere with deepening intimacy. Jumping from anonymous sexual encounters to a public love relationship or marriage will certainly be a difficult transition but not impossible. Whatever fallout is expected if a homosexual love-life became visible to friends, family, and work relationships never turns out to be as bad as expected. Of course, you?ll get a chance to find out who can really love and accept you as you. Always an important project in life for everybody.

Regarding the family of origin, as an adult gay person, chances are you?ve had a difficult time finding the acknowledgment and support you needed. Most gay persons I have treated over the years have their ?war stories? about rejecting family members who criticized them for any kind of visible homosexual behavior. Given the importance of the family as the place and people you are supposed to learn the most about ?love? from while growing up, this kind of experience can be very painful to say the least. It?s understandable why their viewpoints and reactions would be the hardest to ?unload.?

If you were brought up believing that homosexuality is a ?sickness? or ?aberrant? behavior, this obviously won?t make being a married person any easier. In fact, it?s this kind of negative learning experience that creates the conflicts that interfere with a stable married life. Devoting a little time, energy, and possibly resources to figuring out what you?ve learned about homosexuality over the years can help you focus on what to ?let go of? in preparation for marriage.

Last on my list of things that can interfere with a healthy gay marriage is the dose of homophobia that every gay person has consumed growing up in this culture. Our heterosexual society has feared and misunderstood the emergence of homosexuality as a free alternate lifestyle until very recently. The ?liberated homosexual? has been very threatening to people uncertain of their own developing identities.

As an adult gay person living openly, you have to ask yourself to what extent you are still afraid. Afraid of what, you?ll ask? Just afraid. Afraid because you had reasons to be years ago. Afraid because you can still remember the closet you spent time in. Afraid because you still see the fear in some other people even today. Afraid because it?s irrational and doesn?t make sense that you should continue to be.

As with all fears, the more visible we make them, the more easily they can be analyzed in the light of day. As the first generation of gay persons to marry legally, your objective is to dispel the interferences and complications to gay marriage for yourself and the next generations of people who will be free to marry regardless of gender. And to show the heterosexual society you live in that being married as a gay person is no different than being married, period. Dr. T. Jordan

FDA approves Teva version of Amgen's Neupogen

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Drug regulators gave the nod to a Teva Pharmaceutical Industries drug that boosts the production of infection-fighting white blood cells in certain cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

Teva's medicine is similar to Amgen Inc's biologic drug Neupogen, which faces the expiration of its U.S. patent next year.

"While approval at this time is somewhat unexpected, we note the two drugs are not substitutable, and it will require a launch ramp and extensive marketing efforts by Teva to gain share," RBC Capital Markets analyst Michael Yee said in a research note.

Amgen's U.S. sales of Neupogen were $959 million last year, while sales of Neulasta, the biotech company's longer-lasting white blood cell booster, were $3 billion.

In a settlement of patent litigation, Teva agreed last year to refrain from launching its versions of both drugs in the United States until November 2013.

"Teva is prohibited by court order from marketing this product in the U.S. prior to November 10, 2013," Amgen said in a statement.

Teva already sells its version of Neupogen, or filgrastim, in the European Union, where Yee said it accounts for about 5 percent of the overall market.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Teva's drug, called tbo-filgrastim, stimulates bone marrow to increase production of white blood cells, which may help cancer patients recover more quickly from the side effects of chemotherapy.

Biotech drugs, which are derived from living matter such as proteins, are usually given by injection. The innovative drugs - first introduced in the 1980s - can cost tens of thousands of dollars a year. Copying them is much more complicated, and expensive, than duplicating conventional chemical-based compounds.

The FDA earlier this year issued draft guidelines governing the process for review and approval of drugs deemed interchangeable with original biotech products.

But the final rules remain uncertain and many generic drugmakers, such as Israel-based Teva, are pushing forward with biosimilar drugs using the FDA's standard drug approval process.

As global pharmaceutical companies face the loss of patent protection on many established drugs, U.S. sales of biosimilars are expected to reach $1.9 billion to $2.6 billion by 2015, according to IMS Health.

Advanced CT scans accurately assess coronary blockages

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? An ultra-fast, 320-detector computed tomography (CT) scanner can accurately sort out which people with chest pain need -- or don't need -- an invasive procedure such as cardiac angioplasty or bypass surgery to restore blood flow to the heart, according to an international study. Results of the study, which involved 381 patients at 16 hospitals in eight countries, are scheduled to be presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Munich, Germany, on August 28.

"The CORE 320 study is the first prospective, multicenter study to examine the diagnostic accuracy of CT for assessing blockages in blood vessels and determining which of those blockages may be preventing the heart from getting adequate blood flow," says Joao A. C. Lima, M.D., senior author of the study and professor of medicine and radiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "We found an excellent correlation in results when we compared the 320-detector CT testing with the traditional means of assessment using a stress test with imaging and cardiac catheterization."

The study findings, says Lima, would apply to people who have chest pain but are not having a heart attack. Many people in that situation are sent to a cardiac catheterization laboratory for further evaluation with angiography, an invasive test to look for blockages in the coronary arteries using dye and special X-rays. About 30 percent of people who have such catheterization are found to have minimal disease or no blockage requiring an intervention to open or bypass the vessel.

Lima explains that a nuclear medicine stress test with imaging, known as SPECT, shows reduced blood flow to the heart without indicating the number or specific location of blockages.

The 381 patients who completed the study had traditional SPECT tests and invasive angiography. They also had two types of tests with a non-invasive 320-detector CT scanner. In the first CT test, the scanner was used to see the anatomy of vessels to assess whether and where there were blockages. That test is known as CTA, in which the "A" stands for angiography. Then, in a second CT test with the same machine, patients were given a vasodilator, a medicine that dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow to the heart in ways similar to what happens during a stress test. The second test is called CTP, with the "P" standing for perfusion.

According to lead author Carlos E. Rochitte, M.D., a cardiologist at the Instituto do Coracao in Sao Paulo, Brazil, "We found that the 320-detector CT scanner allowed us to see the anatomy of the blockages as well as determine whether the blockages were causing a lack of perfusion to the heart. We were therefore able to correctly identify the patients who needed revascularization within 30 days of their evaluation."

"Many patients are sent for an angioplasty when they may not need it. Our ultimate goal is to have more certainty about which patients having chest pain -- without evidence of a heart attack -- need an invasive procedure to open an arterial blockage," says cardiologist Richard George, M.D., assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a co-author of the study.

"The CTP test added significant information about the patients' conditions and boosted our ability to identify those whose blockages were severe enough to reduce blood flow to the heart," adds George, who developed the CTP method with Lima.

The 320-detector CT provides a complete picture of the heart by making just one revolution around the body. The researchers say the two tests combined -- CTA and CTP -- still produce less radiation than a scan with the 64-detector in widespread use today.

"In our study, the amount of radiation exposure to patients from the two 320-detector CT scanner tests was half the amount they received as a result of the traditional evaluation methods -- the angiogram and nuclear medicine stress test combined," says Lima.

The researchers will continue to follow the patients in the study for up to five years, looking for any heart-related events such as heart attacks, as well as hospital admissions, procedures or surgeries.

Hospitals that participated in the CORE 320 study are located in the United States, Germany, Canada, Brazil, the Netherlands, Denmark, Japan and Singapore. Images obtained during the study were evaluated in core laboratories at Johns Hopkins and at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. The study was sponsored by Toshiba Medical Systems.

Pa. Senate candidate compares abortion decisions

(AP) ? The Republican candidate for Senate in Pennsylvania on Monday compared the decision to abort an unwanted pregnancy resulting from premarital sex to one conceived through rape as he defended his opposition to abortion in all cases.

Tom Smith, who is challenging Democratic Sen. Bob Casey, made the remark after being asked how he would argue to keep the baby if a daughter or granddaughter were to become pregnant as a result of rape. Smith said that his daughter went through "something similar" to rape: "Having a baby out of wedlock."

In the Senate race in Missouri, Republican candidate Todd Akin drew condemnation from Democrats and many Republicans when he referred to "legitimate rape" in discussing his stance against abortion in all cases. The Missouri congressman later apologized for saying that women have a natural biological defense against becoming pregnant because of rape.

Speaking to reporters after an appearance at the Pennsylvania Press Club, Smith said he did not condone rape but was categorically opposed to abortion under any circumstances, including rape or incest.

"I lived something similar to that with my own family, and she chose the life, and I commend her for that," Smith said, adding that his daughter was not raped. "She knew my views, but fortunately for me ... she chose the way I thought."

After comparing the decisions raised by rape and out-of-wedlock pregnancy, Smith was asked a follow-up question about whether the two were similar. He replied: "No, no, no, but, well, put yourself in a father's position. Yes, I mean, it is similar, this isn't, but I'm back to the original, I'm pro-life ? period."

Asked to clarify, he said: "I'm not going to argue about the method of conception. It's a life, and I'm pro-life . It's that simple."

Israeli rabbi calls for prayers for Iran's destruction

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An influential Israeli rabbi has called for prayers for Iran's destruction, a week after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to court his support for a possible attack on a nuclear program Israel sees as an existential threat.

The sermon by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef added to a flurry of recent rhetoric from Israeli officials that has raised international concern that Israel, widely believed to be the Middle East's only atomic power, might attack Iran's nuclear facilities.

"(When) we ask God to 'bring an end to our enemies', we should be thinking about Iran, those evil ones who threaten Israel. May the Lord destroy them," Yosef was quoted as saying by Israeli media on Sunday.

Last week, Netanyahu sent his national security adviser to brief Yosef, 91, on Iran's nuclear activities in what was widely seen as an effort to win his backing for any future military strike, possibly before the U.S. presidential vote in November.

Yosef, a former Israeli chief rabbi, is the spiritual leader of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, a key member of Netanyahu's governing coalition.

Netanyahu is frustrated that Western diplomacy to try to force Iran to rein in its program has so far proved fruitless.

He said on Friday that Iran, whose leaders have threatened Israel's destruction, had made "accelerated progress towards achieving nuclear weapons".

Yosef issued his call in a sermon late on Saturday in which he said Iran should be included in a traditional Jewish New Year blessing next month over food in which God is asked to strike down Israel's enemies.

Netanyahu's security cabinet, which Israeli officials have said is divided over the question of launching a go-it-alone attack on Iran, includes a Shas minister as one of its eight members. Iran says it is enriching uranium for peaceful purposes.

Yosef wields significant influence over Shas's lawmakers, who seek his guidance on policy.

In the past, the Baghdad-born Yosef has stirred controversy by likening Palestinians to snakes, calling for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to "perish from this world" and describing non-Jews as "born only to serve us".

But he has also spoken out in favor of Israel ceding occupied land for peace with the Palestinians in order to end conflict and save Jewish lives.

Sunderland vs. Reading EPL match postponed

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:58 a.m. ET Aug. 25, 2012

SUNDERLAND, England (AP) -Sunderland's Premier League match on Saturday against Reading has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The northeastern club says on its website there was "torrential rain across Wearside overnight and throughout Saturday" at the Stadium of Light.

Referee Neil Swarbrick called the game off following a pitch inspection. A new date has not yet been announced.

The postponement means Reading fans will have made a 960-kilometer round-trip from the south without seeing their side play.

Your Business Can Benefit From Internet Marketing - Consumer ...

August 24th, 2012

Uncategorized, by BracewellBrack121.

If you want to make yourself known you should utilize internet marketing. If you haven?t thought about it, you should give it sincere thought. The following piece is intended to offer insight into the fundamentals of internet marketing and provide advice on creating winning marketing initiatives.

On each page of your website there will be a site-wide link. Many webmasters will put the site wide links at the bottom of every page. Having this kind of link is important for your visitors. For example, say you use an ordering page where you make a good attempt to entice your visitors to buy the product you are promoting. Using this type of link will assist you in attracting more visitors to that page. Your menu can be of great assistance in organizing your website, and should be site-wide to help guide users to the pages that you wish to emphasize. Every link needs to have a clear and straightforward description. Organize your menu so it is easy to understand.

Meta tags cannot be seen by your visitors, but search engines use them to determine what your website is about and how helpful your content is. The first meta tags that you use are the most important ones, and they should be highly relevant to your website?s content. Meta tags can be overly used, so use them cautiously. Don?t be afraid to use alternative tags though, as they can be very beneficial. It is important that you conduct keyword research to allow yourself to pinpoint which keywords are the most searched by your target market.

?H tags? are HTML tags that are used in website code to highlight the importance of some text. Use a bold tag to draw attention to parts of the text that you want readers to notice immediately. Tags can help to give purpose to your articles. Using the bold tag will make it easier for your visitors to maneuver through your site and find the information that they are looking for. This can also enable search engine spiders to quickly find where the vital content is located. Be sure to include keywords in your titles.

It?s best to look for unique ideas when promoting your business online. Successful SEO techniques might work well for you, but you should also look into new strategies to develop an unique campaign. The next video you post online could become the next viral ?buzz? on the internet. When people like what they see, they share it with their friends. Before you know it, everyone has seen your video and knows who you are. These ?viral? episodes normally do not last long, but you can benefit from them when they do occur. There?s an element of luck to what will get that sort of traction, so a lot of it comes down to experimentation. Make sure you post things often on social media and other media-sharing sites, such as YouTube. Duplicating viral videos is possible. When you take a moment to learn about what the essential factors are of a video going viral, it is possible for you to have one posted that will do the same.

It is beneficial to use these as first steps only, since there are so many Internet marketing strategies available to increase your success. Focus on these simple techniques first and, once you have them down, you can look for more complex strategies to use for enhancing your website.

PFT: Cowboys' Bryant seeks out potential mentor

New England Patriots cornerback Arrington and teammate Chung celebrate as Baltimore Ravens kicker Cundiff and Ravens holder Koch show their emotions after a last minute missed field goal in FoxboroughReuters

After a Pro Bowl season in 2010, the Ravens rewarded kicker Billy Cundiff with a five-year, $14.7 million contract extension.

But after a dip in accuracy and a costly playoff miss, they may be planning on how to use the savings by going with a cheaper option.

Cundiff said last night he was ?shocked,? when undrafted rookie Justin Tucker took all the kicks in the Ravens? win against Jacksonville.

?I?m a competitor,? Cundiff said, via the Baltimore Sun. ?Anybody who would be OK with not playing ? and there are situations where guys are beat up and want to rest ? anytime you feel like you?re not getting reps, your competitive side comes out, and you feel like you want to be the one out there kicking.?

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said it was more of an issue of seeing Tucker in a live situation, and Tucker impressed, making all his extra points and a pair of field goals (from 33 and 53 yards).

Pressed on whether there was anything to be read from Tucker doing all the work, Harbaugh replied: ?We?ll see. We have to make some decisions here next week, and we?ll have to see how it goes.?

The Ravens have reason to explore their options.

Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun calculates that the team would realize a net $1.2 million salary cap savings if they went with Tucker instead of Cundiff.

Such an outcome was unthinkable a year ago, but since signing the contract, Cundiff turned in his worst season since 2005, and missed a potential game-tying field goal late in the Ravens? AFC Championship Game loss to the Patriots.

Those kind of kicks linger in the mind of decision-makers, and if they can save money to boot, it could mean Cundiff?s sitting for more than one night.

Your Contraceptives Can Affect Your Mental Health - EmpowHER.com

With the affordability of contraceptives for many women under the Affordable Care Act, it might be tempting to rush in to the doctor to get a prescription.

But first it?s important to know how different contraceptives can affect not only your overall physical health, but also your mental health.

Contraceptives come in many forms, such as the birth control pill and IUD, so each type could potentially have varying side effects depending on the individual. Experts provide some benefits and downfalls of contraceptives in regard to mental health.

Dr. Wendie Trubow, a board certified gynecologist and quality director at Visions HealthCare, said in an email that birth control pills especially can have the ability to affect mental health.

?Any contraceptive that contains hormones has the potential to [impact] a woman's mental health due to the effect synthetic hormones can have on a woman's body,? Trubow said. ?For any woman who is prone to depression, anxiety, sadness, or [mood] swings, the hormone-containing contraceptives can magnify those responses.?

?The mechanism is complicated, and involves the woman's innate state of health, her overall toxic burden, and the way her liver processes and her gut excretes the hormones she has taken,? she added.

?Additionally, oral contraceptives inhibit ovulation, which can blunt a woman's sexual drive. This can be distressing for many women and their partners, who don't understand why their sex drive is suddenly diminished.?

For women who are already experiencing mental health problems before taking contraceptives, it can be a gamble to starting taking pills with hormones.

?Any woman who has a history of depression, anxiety, panic disorders, mood swings or seasonal affective disorder should consider how well she manages her mental health prior to beginning a hormone-containing contraceptive, because for a subset of women, taking this type of contraceptive can worsen an underlying mental health issue,? Trubow said.

Pilots at American Airlines plan strike vote

DALLAS (AP) ? Pilots for American Airlines and US Airways are talking about terms for a possible labor deal if the two airlines merge.

Both groups of pilots would get raises on the day of a merger, said James Ray, a spokesman for US Airways pilots. After three years, he said, they would earn pay similar to that of pilots for Delta Air Lines Inc., whose recent contract is considered tops in the industry.

The terms are based on the outline of a deal in April between US Airways and pilots at American. Pilots for both airlines are now discussing changes to that outline.

Ray said that his union's board could decide this week whether to ask US Airways pilots to ratify the changes, which would also need approval by American's pilots.

The talks come as US Airways Group Inc. continues to press for a merger with American that would put its executives in charge of the combined company. US Airways, based in Tempe, Ariz., already reached contingent agreements in April with unions at American, which filed for bankruptcy protection in November.

On Wednesday, US Airways CEO Doug Parker flew to Dallas-Fort Worth to meet the new acting president of the Allied Pilots Association. A spokesman for the American union said they talked about industry consolidation.

Thomas Horton, the CEO of American parent AMR Corp., was dismissive of US Airways' overtures for several months, preferring that AMR emerge from bankruptcy protection on its own. Under pressure from creditors, however, AMR has started exploring merger options, including with US Airways, that creditors could compare to an independent AMR.

Separately on Wednesday, the American pilots' union said it would hold a strike-authorization vote if American tried to use the bankruptcy process to throw out the pilots' contract and impose deeper cuts in benefits and work rules.

A hearing on American's request to cancel the pilots' contract is scheduled for Sept. 4 before a federal bankruptcy judge in New York.

Federal law makes it difficult for airline unions to legally strike. In 2007, a federal appeals court blocked a planned strike by flight attendants at Northwest Airlines after the airline threw out the union's contract as part of its bankruptcy case.

Union spokesman Gregg Overman said pilots would strike only if they had legal permission from the National Mediation Board, but Wednesday's declaration showed labor's resolve.

"Our pilots are looking to us for leadership to resist any move by management to reject our contract," Overman said. He said the union still wants to negotiate with the company.

The company warned against a strike.

"Any form of job action by pilots would be unlawful, either before or after a decision by the court on the company's motion" to throw out their contract, said Bruce Hicks, a spokesman for Fort Worth-based AMR.

AMR is trying to slash annual labor costs by about $1 billion and return to profitability after losing more than $10 billion since 2001.

American won concessions in new contracts covering about 40,000 ground workers and flight attendants, but American's 8,000 active pilots risked even deeper cost-cutting measures by rejecting a company offer this month.

Two Decades in Education: A Look Back | RN Bookmark

Read Naturally recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, and I thought it?d be fun to take a look at how education and schools have changed over the last two decades.? Many things have changed, and many things have stayed the same.

School Supplies

I began my research by comparing back-to-school supply lists from 1992 and 2012.? My findings surprised me some.? Most of the supplies where the same!? In 1992 students were asked to bring pens, pencils and notebooks, of course.? Some lists asked for tissues or paper towels.? Predictable school supplies like erasers, tape, highlighters and loose leaf paper are found on lists from both 1992 and 2012.? Glue sticks have replaced paste, which must rank as one of many teachers? most welcome changes.? As you can imagine, I did find a few new items on the 2012 lists that weren?t on school supply lists two decades ago.? Dry erase markers were on a number of current lists. Most schools were still using chalk boards in 1992.? Headphones or ear buds appeared on some 2012 lists. I didn?t find that item anywhere on the older lists.? Hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes have become common items in 2012, too.? The thumb drive has now become a standard requirement for many schools.? If you recall, in 1992 the disk was still floppy.

New Technology

Floppy disks are long gone, but they marked the beginning of a major change in education.? Computers and technology have made their way into our homes, offices, and our schools.? From desktops to laptop to iPads and iPods, the trend is obvious and likely to continue.? In 1992, very few people had computers at home.? Many schools had a computer lab with a few desktops, but their educational function was still limited.? I mostly remember playing Oregon Trail as a reward for good behavior, rather than any actual learning or instructional software.? Now, in 2012, the number of computers and the variety and quality of educational software products has increase dramatically.? Many students come to school already having computer skills and many parents expect technology to be a major component in their child?s education.? Some districts are even experimenting with virtual classrooms.

Curriculum, Assessment & Standards

Over the last 20 years, there have been many changes in how students are instructed and which skills are focused on.? A simple example is the change from teaching penmanship to keyboarding, but there are many, many more.? Recently, we?ve seen a major push toward Early Childhood Education, Common Core Standards, Response to Intervention, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math).? Schools are engaged much more with standardized testing, benchmark assessments, and progress monitoring these days, and things like Family and Consumer Science have been deemphasized or left behind altogether.? There also seems to be fewer art projects, movie showings (or film reels), and holiday parties nowadays.

Whether you think the changes are positive or negative, we can all agree that things have indeed changed.? It?s a new generation of students and parents.? You have new tools and research at your disposal.? There are new challenges facing you today that simply weren?t a concern 20 years ago.? Times have changed, and as professional educators I?m sure you?ve adapted to make the best of changing situations.? Your efforts are appreciated.

What kind of changes have you experienced over your career and in your local area?? Please share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

Wall Street dips on Japan data, Greece meetings eyed

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks slipped on Wednesday as weak export data from Japan and Greece's meetings this week with European Union officials gave traders a reason to cash in some of their recent gains.

Uncertainty lingered over the effectiveness of Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' European charm offensive. Samaras is trying to convince EU officials he should be given more time to meet targets for deficit cuts.

Japan's exports slumped the most in six months in July as shipments to Europe and China tumbled, adding to concerns over global demand.

The S&P 500 hit its highest level in more than four years on Tuesday but the new peak failed to hold and the index closed in the red. However, its steady move higher has lifted short-term support to the 1,400 level and any bullish catalyst could further extend the rally.

"Yesterday we pierced the highs and ran out of steam, so people took that as a sign of exhaustion. Today you get negative news out of Japan, Greece coming back to the table...people are just looking for catalysts to take some money off after this kind of stealth rally that we've had," said Ken Polcari, managing director at ICAP Equities in New York.

He said absent any definitive news out of Europe, which he doesn't expect, the S&P could be stuck between 1,400 and 1,425 at least until the end of next week.

The Jackson Hole, Wyoming, meeting of central bankers and economists at the end of the month is seen as the next big market catalyst, followed by the European Central Bank's September 6 meeting and the German constitutional court's vote to ratify the euro zone rescue fund six days later.

Among the most traded U.S. stocks Wednesday was Dell Inc , down 6.6 percent to $11.52 a day after the No. 2 U.S. PC maker warned of a challenging second half and slashed its full-year earnings outlook.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> fell 59.43 points, or 0.45 percent, to 13,144.15. The S&P 500 Index <.spx> dropped 3.70 points, or 0.26 percent, to 1,409.47. The Nasdaq Composite <.ixic> lost 3.44 points, or 0.11 percent, to 3,063.82.

The Federal Reserve releases minutes from its July-August meeting at 2:00 p.m. Investors will parse them for signs that members are moving closer to new stimulus measures or conversely toward raising interest rates sooner than expected.

Toll Brothers Inc shares rose to their highest since February 2007 after the largest U.S. luxury homebuilder reported a higher quarterly profit and a sharp jump in new orders. The stock was last up 4.3 percent at $33.17 and the PHLX housing sector index <.hgx> added 2.3 percent.

Continuing a string of bullish housing sector data, U.S. home resales rose in July as low interest rates and a modest improvement in the labor market helped home buying conditions.

Shares of Sunrise Senior Living rose 60 percent to $14.26 after Health Care REIT Inc said it would acquire the company for $ 14.50 per share.

DEAR FACEBOOK: Jump Into Search And Triple ... - Business Insider

Facebook search

Facebook's demolished stock caught a minor lift this afternoon when Josh Constine of TechCrunch reported that the company is getting ready to launch a Facebook-specific type of search ad.

This news reminded investors of what they were thinking when they plunged lock, stock, and barrel into Facebook's IPO three months ago--which is that the company has a massive global platform on which it should be able to layer on lucrative new products.

Alas, it quickly became clear that the search ads Facebook will be rolling out are designed merely to help increase traffic within Facebook.

So, once again, Facebook investors lost hope.

But investors shouldn't forget about this one completely.

Facebook does, in fact, have a huge opportunity in search.

And with the company's stock price now half of what it was only three months ago, even the adamantly idealistic Mark Zuckerberg might be tempted to rake in some easy money from search--especially when raking in this money won't in any way hurt the Facebook user experience.

In fact, improving search might help the Facebook user experience.

Why?

Because Facebook users, just like other Internet and mobile users, often search for things. And the things they're searching for aren't always on Facebook.

Sometimes, for example, Facebook users search for products they want to buy.

So instead of (or in addition to) trying to dream up ever-more-clever ways to place "social ads" in front of users when they're not interested in seeing ads or buying anything, maybe it's time for Facebook to take advantage of the fact that its users actually sometimes do want to buy things.

That window drives $40 billion in revenue.

Because, after all, that's the magic that allows Google to generate more than $40 billion in annual revenue--about 10-times what Facebook makes from its annoying little display ads.

Google doesn't hang its advertisements on the walls at a party, which is effectively what Facebook does.

Google doesn't hang its advertisements anywhere, in fact, until its users tell it what they want to buy.

Then Google gives its users ads that might help them buy what they're looking for.

That's why Google is the most successful ad-driven company in history: Because its ads are mind-bogglingly targeted and relevant, and they're shown to users only when users want to see them. Facebook users, meanwhile, want to do everything but look at ads--Facebook users want to keep socializing with their friends. (SEE: "Like Hell Facebook Will Kill Google")

So, why doesn't Facebook just start doing the same thing Google is doing?

Yahoo, which is imploding, still generates nearly $2 billion a year from search revenue. And it's almost all profit.

AOL, which is also imploding, also generates nearly $500 million a year from search revenue. And it's almost all profit.

Microsoft, which is in the software business, generates about $2 billion a year from search revenue. (Unlike the other search players, Microsoft is hemorrhaging money, but Facebook wouldn't have to do that.)

Why does Facebook have such a huge opportunity in search?

Because 500 million people a month live on Facebook.

They don't visit Facebook.

They live there.

They start at Facebook, communicate through Facebook, and quickly return to Facebook every time they stray away.

So maybe it's time Facebook helped them to start searching at Facebook--and not just for things that are on Facebook. Facebook should help its users start searching for everything.

(If Facebook is really clever about this, and can figure out ways to use the immense amount of data it already has about its users to make its search tools even more useful, it could actually build a better search engine.)

Make no mistake: One of the reasons Google is so obsessed with Facebook (see Google +, etc.) is because Google knows that Facebook could one day threaten its core revenue engine. If Facebook focused on search, it could make it so people had no reason to go to Google to search for anything--because they're already on Facebook. And Google obviously knows that.

How much revenue could Facebook generate from search?

Well, according to Andrew Lipsman at Comscore, Facebook is already doing 1.6 billion web-based searches a month.

That's 3-times as many as AOL.?

It's one-fifth as many as Yahoo (which no effort whatsoever).

Yes, it's only 1/100th as many as Google, but, again, Facebook is generating those queries with no effort whatsoever.

So let's assume that Facebook could go do a search deal with Google that paid it as much as AOL gets paid per search. This would allow it to instantly generate ~$1 billion of annual search revenue tomorrow.

And then let's say that Facebook actually made it a priority to boost search as a Facebook service and revenue stream and increase its number of search queries.

Given the amount of time people spend on Facebook, as opposed to the amount they spend on Yahoo, I hope it's not disrespectful to Yahoo to suggest that Facebook could--in relatively short order--amass as many search queries as Yahoo.

And if Facebook did its outsourced search monetization deal with Google instead of with Microsoft, Facebook could probably get much better monetization per search than Yahoo does.

(This is important: Facebook doesn't have to go build a search engine. It just has to do a bigger deal with one.)

So it doesn't seem unreasonable to suggest that, with Yahoo's 10 billion queries a month, Facebook might be able to generate $3 billion of annual search revenue.

This $3 billion of annual search revenue, importantly, would be almost 100% profit.

Why?

Because Facebook wouldn't be incurring any costs to build its search engine--it would simply be working with Google.

Google would charge advertisers, say, $1 per click, and Facebook would get $0.90 of that.

That's exactly how Google works with AOL.

It's exactly how Microsoft works with Yahoo.

In other words, there's no reason for Facebook to have to completely reorient itself as a company to cash in on search. It just has to pick up the money sitting in the corner.

$3 billion of pure-profit search revenue would quickly double Facebook's annual operating profit.

The launch of an exciting new Facebook revenue growth engine, meanwhile, would get investors so excited about Facebook again that they would suddenly be eager to pay a lot more for the stock.

So, between incremental earnings and multiple expansion, it seems reasonable to think that an aggressive move into search could eventually triple Facebook's market cap.

So, how about it Facebook?

Do you maybe want to pick up the huge pile of search money sitting in the corner?

Or are you going to stubbornly keep focusing on "social ads?"

How Science Can Improve Teaching

Image: Ross MacDonald

Most teachers would agree that it is important that students remember much of what they read. Yet one of the most common sights on high school and college campuses across the land is that of students poring over textbooks, yellow marker in hand, highlighting pertinent passages?which often end up including most of the page. Later in the semester, to prepare for their exams, students hit the textbooks again, rereading the yellow blocks of text.

Studies have shown that highlighting and rereading text is among the least effective ways for students to remember the content of what they have read. A far better technique is for students to quiz themselves. In one study, students who read a text once and then tried to recall it on three occasions scored 50 percent higher on exams than students who read the text and then reread it three times. And yet many teachers persist in encouraging?or at least not discouraging?the techniques that science has proved to fall short.

This is just one symptom of a general failure to integrate scientific knowledge of the mind into schooling. Many commonly held ideas about education defy scientific principles of thinking and learning. For example, a common misconception is that teaching content is less important than teaching critical thinking skills or problem-solving strategies. Scientists have also long known that kids must be explicitly taught the connections between letters and sounds and that they benefit most when such instruction is planned and explicit. Yet some reading programs, even those used in large school districts, teach this information only if an instructor sees the need.

It is easy to argue that teachers ought to do a better job of keeping up with science, but teaching is already a labor-intensive profession. And it is difficult for the nonspecialist to separate scientific research from the usual flood of quackery and pseudoscience. Peddlers of expensive and supposedly research-based nostrums lobby school districts. Other products that may have scientific validity have not yet been thoroughly tested. For example, theories of mathematical learning suggest that linear (but not circular) board games may boost math preparedness in preschoolers, but the idea needs large-scale testing.

How are educators supposed to know which practices to use? An institution that vets research and summarizes it for educators could solve the problem. Medicine provides a precedent. Practicing physicians do not have the time to keep up with the tens of thousands of research articles published annually that might suggest a change in treatment. Instead they rely on reputable summaries of research, published annually, that draw conclusions as to whether the accumulated evidence merits a change in medical practice. Teachers have nothing like these authoritative reviews. They are on their own.

The U.S. Department of Education has, in the past, tried to bring some scientific rigor to teaching. The What Works Clearinghouse, created in 2002 by the DOE's Institute of Education Sciences, evaluates classroom curricula, programs and materials, but its standards of evidence are overly stringent, and teachers play no role in the vetting process. Teachers also play no role in the evaluation, and their participation is crucial. Researchers can evaluate research, but teachers understand education. The purpose of this institution would be to produce information that can be used to shape teaching and learning.

It is also important that insights provided by a clearinghouse come from basic science. Many teachers, for instance, need to be disabused of the notions children have different ?learning styles? and that boys' brains are hardwired to be better at spatial tasks than girls'. This job of bringing accurate scientific information about thinking and learning to teachers might arguably fall to schools of education, states, districts and teachers' professional organizations, but these institutions have shown little interest in the job. A neutral national review board would be the simplest and quickest answer to a problem that is a big obstacle to broad improvement across many schools.
