A novel avian influenza virus has acquired the ability to infect aquatic mammals and was responsible for an outbreak of fatal pneumonia that recently struck harbor seals in New England, according to scientists at the Center for Infection & Immunity (CII) at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, New England Aquarium, USGS National Wildlife Health Center, SeaWorld and EcoHealth Alliance.

This research is published in mBio.

Wildlife officials first became concerned in September 2011, when seals with severe pneumonia and skin lesions suddenly appeared along the coastline from southern Maine to northern Massachusetts. Most were infants (less than 6 months), and a total of 162 dead or moribund seals were recovered over the next 3 months.

Pathogen screening was conducted in a subset of afflicted seals, using sensitive diagnostic tools developed at the CII, and a new strain of avian H3N8 influenza virus was identified as a culprit.

"When initial tests revealed an avian influenza virus, we asked the obvious question: how did this virus jump from birds to seals?" says Simon Anthony, D.Phil, postdoctoral research scientist at the CII and the lead author of the study.

Based on full genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis, seal H3N8 descended from an avian strain that has been circulating in North American waterfowl since 2002, which implies recent transmission from wild birds to seals.

Accordingly, seal H3N8 has acquired the ability to bind sialic acid receptors that are commonly found in the mammalian respiratory tract. Mutations in the HA and PB2 genes required for cell entry and replication, respectively suggest enhanced virulence and transmission in mammals, but these putative attributes require further investigation. Given these findings along with the long history of the spread of avian influenza to humansmost notably H1N1 and H5N1seal H3N8 could pose a threat to public health.

"Our findings reinforce the importance of wildlife surveillance in predicting and preventing pandemics, says W. Ian Lipkin, director of the Center for Infection and Immunity and John Snow Professor of Epidemiology, at the Mailman School of Public Health. "HIV/AIDS, SARS, West Nile, Nipah and influenza are all examples of emerging infectious diseases that originated in animals. Any outbreak of disease in domestic animals or wildlife, while an immediate threat to wildlife conservation, must also be considered potentially hazardous to humans."

They found that those with the highest dietary intake of vitamins C, E and selenium had a 67% reduced risk of developing pancreatic cancer.

Apple, Twitter talks said to end without investment more than a year ago

Apple Inc. isn?t currently in talks with Twitter Inc. about investing in the operator of a micro- blogging service, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The companies were in discussions more than a year ago and talks ended without an agreement, said one of the people, who asked not to be named because the deliberations were private.

The two held talks in recent months about Apple making an investment in the hundreds of millions of dollars, the New York Times reported on July 27. The deal would have valued Twitter at more than US$10-billion, the Times said.

Representatives from Cupertino, California-based Apple and San Francisco-based Twitter declined to comment.

Twitter, while still smaller than online competitors Google Inc. and Facebook Inc., expects to generate at least US$1-billion in sales in 2014, two people with knowledge of the matter have said. Researchers at EMarketer Inc. have said that in 2014 Twitter advertising sales, which account for almost all its revenue, will rise to US$540-million from US$139.5-million last year. The closely held company doesn?t release sales figures.

Twitter has stepped up a campaign to induce marketers to devote more of their advertising budgets to its service, which lets users post messages of no more than 140 characters to followers. Twitter, which unveiled its first advertising offering in 2010, has recently expanded mobile-advertising services.

Social Media

Apple?s latest version of the operating system for Mac desktops and notebooks, called Mountain Lion, adds direct support for Twitter, making it easier for users to share their comments and content directly.

Apple?s profit and sales fell short of analysts? projections for only the second time since 2003 as customers held off on iPhone purchases while waiting for a new model to be introduced later in the year.

Net income climbed 21% to $8.82 billion, or US$9.32 a share, in the period that ended June 30, Cupertino, California- based Apple said in a statement July 24. Sales rose 23% to US$35-billion. Analysts had predicted profit of US$10.37 a share on revenue of US$37.2-billion, the average of estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

While Apple outgrew its closest technology-industry peers, the company?s sales climbed at the slowest pace since mid-2009.

France Declares War On California: The Battle Over Foie Gras

President Francois Hollande has defended one of his nation?s many gourmet delicacies, foie gras, in response to the state of California?s decision to ban the production and sale of the tasty product on grounds of animal cruelty.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper of Britain reported that France produces more than 16 million tons of foie gras every year, principally by force-feeding corn to ducks and geese in order to enlarge their livers. Only 3,000 tons are exported, however.

Britain has already banned the production of foie gras but has not yet prohibited their import. Force-feeding has also been banned in Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark and Israel.

Speaking at a foie gras farm over the weekend in Monlezun in the southwestern part of France, Hollande said he ?would not let foie gras exports be jeopardized, especially in certain countries, or certain states in America,? a reference to California, which outlawed foie gras on July 1.

The French president said he will vociferously argue his case and ?if necessary, I?ll bring as much as needed to [the] authorities.?

On a more serious note, Hollande said California's ban on foie gras violates the principles of free trade and cited that the production of the delicacy adheres to the strictest sanitary laws of Europe.

?Foie gras is a great French product that is an honor to those devoted to it,? he said. ?[The Americans] can?t defend free trade and forbid a good product like foie gras.?

It is unclear what Hollande can do to repeal California?s law, although he half-jokingly suggested he would send free foie gras to American lawmakers to persuade them as to its benefits.

France remains the No. 1 producer and consumer of foie gras -- indeed, under French law, the product is part of the ?protected cultural and gastronomical heritage of France.?

The California prohibition of foie gras was originally drawn up in 2004 by John Burton, who was then the State Senate president and now serves as the chairman of the California Democratic Party, citing the cruelty of force-feeding the birds to fatten their livers.

"How would you like to have a tube crammed down your throat and corn forced down it? It's very inhumane," he said, according to the Telegraph.

"Any restaurant that serves foie gras is a high-class restaurant, so I don't think they'll be going broke because of this."

The people for the Ethical Treatment Animals, or PETA, takes a similar dim view of foie gras.

?To produce foie gras ? workers ram pipes down male ducks' or geese's throats two or three times daily and pump as much as four pounds of grain and fat into the animals' stomachs, causing their livers to bloat to up to 10 times their normal size,? PETA said.?

?Many birds have difficulty standing because of their engorged livers, and they may tear out their own feathers and cannibalize each other out of stress.?

PETA added that the birds are ?kept in tiny wire cages or packed into sheds. On some farms, a single worker may be expected to force-feed 500 birds three times each day. Because of this rush, animals are often treated roughly and left injured and suffering.?

When asked about opposition to Chick-fil-A's having given millions to advocates for so-called traditional marriage, Cathy chirped, "Well, guilty as charged."

That's when the Chick hit the fan. Odds are if you're a Democrat, your social media networks exploded with outrage. The Jim Henson Company, the folks who brought you Kermit and Miss Piggy, severed its ties to the restaurant chain with a Facebook post. Actor Ed Helms said he was never going there again. Star-studded audience for Olympic opening ceremony

LONDON (AP) ? There will be monarchs, presidents, prime ministers ? and David Beckham. Friday's opening ceremony for the London Olympics is an A-list affair.

Among the 60,000 spectators at Olympic Stadium will be Queen Elizabeth II ? who as British head of state will officially open the games ? along with royals including Prince William and his wife Kate, and Prince Harry.

There's sure to be a sprinkling of showbiz royalty, too, with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, recently filming in Britain, the most often-cited names.

The British government says more than 80 heads of state and government will be in the audience, including royalty from Brunei, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.

The U.S. will be represented by first lady Michelle Obama and Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney will also attend.

Beckham, who helped bring the games to London and is widely rumored to have a role in the ceremony, will be there, and British newspapers have speculated that boxing great Muhammad Ali may also be involved.

The show, a 27 million pound ($42 million) spectacular titled "Isles of Wonder," will end with a performance by Paul McCartney.

Western Digital Red Hard Drives

Western Digital's new line of Red drives ?has been specifically engineered to work with NAS devices. These 3.5-inch SATA drives can be installed in most of the common NAS devices on the market including those from Synology, Qnap, D-Link, and Drobo. The Red drives support NAS drives with up to five drive bays. Western Digital states that its 3D Active Balance Plus technology provides enhanced balance control designed to maximize drive performance and reliability. That is hard to prove without extensive testing, but the Red drives did give performance gains in Write and Read speeds in testing, making WD's Red drives worth considering for those needing fast and reliable NAS performance.

Specs
WD Red hard drives ship in 3.5-inch 1TB (model number WD10EFRX, $109 list), 2TB (model number WD20EFRX, $139 list) , and 3TB (model number WD30EFRX $189 list) capacities. The drives all have 64MB cache and support speeds up to 6GBps. Although Western Digital does not specify their spin rates, the Red drives use WD's Intellipower technology, which provides RPMs between 5,400-7,200rpm.

The Red drives measure approximately 1 by 4 by 5.8 inches (HWD), fitting easy into the typical NAS drive bay.? The 1TB and 3TB drives each weighs 0.99 pound and the 2TB model weighs 1.40 pounds.

The drives are Advanced Format certified, meaning they are 4KB long-data sector-based drives. In addition, the drives are RoHS compliant and have SATA latching connectors.

Performance
I tested the Red drives in Synology's DiskStation DS1812+ . The DS1812+ originally shipped with five drives: three Samsung HD103SJ drives (which are 1TB and spin at 7,200rpm) and two Seagate Barracude 1TB drives (model number ST 1000DM003). The drives were configured in the DS1812+ using Hybrid RAID (SHR), Synology's proprietary RAID solution. SHR provides one disk worth of data redundancy; if a disk fails, the data volume will remain available for use. SHR also provides easy storage capacity as larger disks are added to the RAID configuration.

I swapped out the five original drives with five WD Red drives. The drives were reconfigured with SHR and then tested for performance with the same methodology we use to test SMB SATA-based NAS devices. The DS1812+'s performance using the WD Red drives when compared with the original drives the NAS was shipped with is as follows:

• Original drives: Write speed: 83MBps, Read speed: 71 MBps
• WD Red drives: Write speed: 107 MBps, Read speed: 100 MBps

Although the original drive configuration gave us some of the highest performance numbers for an SMB NAS that we?ve tested, performance got even better with Western Digtal's Red drives.

While the Red drive proved to boost Read and Write speeds during testing, the questions remains, are these drives which are pricier than other SATA drives on the market?for example, WD's 3TB caviar drive, is about $20 less than its Red counterpart?worth the extra cost?

It's hard to quantify Western Digital's?claims about features such as superior error recovery control prevention and support for more reliable RAID rebuilds, but you can't dismiss the fact that the company offers 24/7 support plus a three year warranty.
One of the biggest banes of NAS ownership is drive failure. Many of the SMB-level NAS devices that the Red line is designed for are shipped diskless. This leaves customers selecting and installing their own drives. Compatibility issues between drives and the NAS device can cause drive failure and other problems. For environments that require NASes with high availability and reliable fault tolerance, drives specifically engineered to work with NASes, are worth considering.

For small businesses and power users that have heavy dependence on a NAS device, particularly for those using a NAS that's regularly getting a lot of data written to it, the Western Digital Red line of SATA drives for NASes, is a worthy investment and earns 4 out of 5 stars.

Mobile and online game acquisitions heat up in 2012 | VentureBeat

The game merger and acquisition craze is still hot in 2012 thanks to the rapid growth in the number and size of game deals this year.

Data from the Corum Group, a mergers and acquisitions services company, and Digi-Capital show that this year continues to be a hot one for the game industry, according to a presentation by Jim Perkins and Alina Soltys at the Casual Connect game conference in Seattle.

?Gambling and gaming has become a very important sector,? Perkins said. ?Overall, M&A in gaming is a frenzy.?

Two big deals signal the shift that is happening this year toward mobile and cloud gaming. Zynga bought OMGPOP for at least $180 million as it sought to capture the benefits of the fast-growing mobile gaming title Draw Something. And Sony gave a big endorsement to cloud gaming with its $380 million acquisition of Gaikai.

Of ?the two big game companies that recently began trading publicly, Zynga saw its stock price drop about 46 percent, while Nexon?s has risen 15 percent. In 2011, Zynga was among the top three ?in all of tech in terms of the number of companies acquired ? 13. Zynga?s M&A activity was behind a lot of the momentum we saw in 2011, and we?re seeing that trend continue in 2012.

Perkins and Soltys also pointed to some huge activity in Asia this year, where?lots of game companies have gone public and are flush with cash. NetEase has the most cash with $2.2 billion in cash. Tencent has $1.25 billion. Shanda Interactive has $1.2 billion. Ren Ren has $1.05 billion. Others with a lot of cash include Sohu, Shanda Gaming, cYou, Perfect World, Giant Interactive, KongZhong, The9, and Taomee.

The overall number of mergers across all of technology has slowed somewhat from the first half of 2011. Aggregate valuations have dropped somewhat to about the same level as the third quarter of 2010.?The big rise in gaming M&A deals is all the more impressive against the backdrop of that general slump.

Digi-Capital reported that game M&A deals totaled $3.5 billion in 2011, compared to less than $1.5 billion in 2010. Seven major game companies (Zynga, Gree, WeMade, Tencent, IGT, Rovio, and Nexon) acquired 21 companies in the first half of 2012. As you can see in the chart below, online games were the hottest category for game acquisitions, accounting for 71.5 percent of deals in 2011, compared to just 43.2 percent of deals in 2010.
So far this year, the picture has changed, as you can see from the charts below. Online games now account for just 56.3 percent of deals. The big growth in M&A has been for mobile games, which now account for 29.2 percent of deals in the first half of 2012, compared to just 7.5 percent of deals in all of 2011. Payment-related deals have fallen from 15.5 percent in 2011 to just 5.2 percent in the first half of 2011. The PC and console core game market accounted for only 3.1 percent of deals in the first half of 2012, compared to 4.5 percent for all of 2011. ?

Perkins predicts that mobile games would account for the bulk of game-related M&A deals in 2013. Mobile is expected to account for 42 percent of all deals in gaming in 2013, while online will account for 39 percent. Soltys noted that smartphone penetration of the U.S. population is now at 50 percent. Ten percent of U.S. households now have three or more iPads. iPad and overall mobile data usage is up dramatically.

About 41 percent of game deals so far in 2012 have taken place in the U.S., compared to 11 percent in South Korea and 8 percent in Japan.

In terms of investments in game companies, mobile accounted for 34.4 percent in the first half of 2012, compared to 5.1 percent in 2011. Online accounted for 44.8 percent of deals in 2012, compared to 69.8 percent in 2011. As you can see in the chart below, U.S. entities accounted for 48 percent of the fundings in game companies in the first half of 2012. That was followed by 7 percent for China and 6 percent for the U.K.

Perkins said that game mergers and acquisitions are accelerating, though game IPOs are mixed. The core gaming industry is narrowing its focus to blockbuster games like Diablo III. But the real sales growth of the industry is coming from games for smartphones and tablets.?The social game industry?s profit growth has slowed, and new frontiers that could get investments include motion-sensing and voice recognition.

The active acquirers in the game world include Gree, Zynga, DeNA/Ngmoco, WeMade, and Neowiz. Overall, Perkins predicted the console market consolidation will continue, Asia game companies will acquire U.S. firms, mobile will be a big driver in 2013, and the possible legalization of online gambling in the U.S. is fueling a speculative boom in social casino games.

?I think social casino games will keep on growing,? Perkins said.

Force of habit: Stress hormones switch off areas of the brain for goal-directed behaviour

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Cognition psychologists at the Ruhr-Universit?t together with colleagues from the University Hospital Bergmannsheil (Prof. Dr. Martin Tegenthoff) have discovered why stressed persons are more likely to lapse back into habits than to behave goal-directed. The team of PD Dr. Lars Schwabe and Prof. Dr. Oliver Wolf from the Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have mimicked a stress situation in the body using drugs. They then examined the brain activity using functional MRI scanning.

The researchers have now reported in the Journal of Neuroscience that the interaction of the stress hormones hydrocortisone and noradrenaline shut down the activity of brain regions for goal-directed behaviour. The brain regions responsible for habitual behaviour remained unaffected.

Two stress hormones in use

In order to test the different stress hormones, the cognition psychologists used three substances -- a placebo, the stress hormone hydrocortisone and yohimbine, which ensures that the stress hormone noradrenaline stays active longer. Part of the volunteers received hydrocortisone alone or just yohimbine, others both substances. A fourth group were administered a placebo. Altogether, the data of 69 volunteers was included in the study.

Goal-directed behaviour and habits investigated in the experiment

In the experiment, all participants -- both male and female -- learned that they would receive cocoa or orange juice as a reward if they chose certain symbols on the computer. After this learning phase, volunteers were allowed to eat as many oranges or as much chocolate pudding as they liked. "That weakens the value of the reward," explained Schwabe. "Whoever eats chocolate pudding will lose the attraction to cocoa. Whoever is satiated with oranges, has less appetite for orange juice." In this context, goal-directed behaviour means: Whoever has previously eaten the chocolate pudding, chooses the symbols leading to cocoa reward less frequently. Whoever is satiated with oranges, selects less frequently the symbols associated with orange juice. Based on previous results, the scientists assumed that only the combination of yohimbine and hydrocortisone attenuates goal-directed behaviour. They have now confirmed this hypothesis.

Combined effect of yohimbine and hydrocortisone

As expected, volunteers who took yohimbine and hydrocortisone did not behave goal-directed but according to habit. In other words, satiation with oranges or chocolate pudding had no effect. Persons who had taken a placebo or only one medication, on the other hand, behaved goal-directed and showed a satiating effect. The brain data revealed: The combination of yohimbine and hydrocortisone reduced the activity in the forebrain -- in the so-called orbitofrontal and medial prefrontal cortex. These areas have been already previously associated with goal-directed behaviour. The brain regions which are important for habitual learning, on the other hand, were similarly active for all volunteers.

Child Abuse Linked to Higher Odds for Cancer as Adult

TUESDAY, July 24 (HealthDay News) -- Adults who suffered frequent emotional or physical abuse as children are at increased risk for cancer, a new study suggests.

The more frequent and intense the abuse, the greater the risk of cancer, the researchers added. The effect was particularly significant when mothers abused daughters and fathers abused sons, according to researchers from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.

The findings come from data on more than 2,100 U.S. adults who took part in the National Survey of Midlife Development. The study was published online in the Journal of Aging and Health.

"People often say that children are resilient and they'll bounce back, but we found that there are events that can have long-term consequences on adult health," Kenneth Ferraro, a professor of sociology and director of Purdue's Center on Aging and the Life Course, said in a university news release.

"We would like to see child abuse noted as an environmental factor that can increase cancer occurrence in adulthood. More research on this topic also could help mediate the effects or improve interventions to help abused children," he added.

The intensity of the social bond between parents and children of the same sex may be one reason why cancer risk is particularly high among sons who were abused by their fathers and daughters who were abused by their mothers, the researchers added.

Thank you so much to Books Books the Magical Fruit for the interview today. What fun! Okay, a little about me: I?m the author of two novels, YEAR OF THE SMOKE GIRL and THE FLOWER BOWL SPELL. By day, I?m a freelance writer, and I earned my master's degree in creative writing from UC Davis. I?ve published short stories in the Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA) anthology Cheers to Muses, the literary journal MARY, and The Lyon Review, among others.

1. Who or what inspired you to become a writer?

My father, who is a retired teacher. When I was a kid, he was always working on something in his spare time, a novel or short stories in his corner of the living room where he kept his desk and typewriter and books.

2. How long did it take you to write The Flower Bowl Spell?

I started it in the fall of 2004, finishing a rough draft for National Novel Writing Month. Over the next 7 years, I worked on it on and off with different degrees of intensity, putting it aside for almost a year a couple of times to let it simmer, so to speak.

3. While writing, how many times do you go back and rewrite a plot?

Hm, I haven?t thought about this very thoroughly. I?m not a very plot-oriented writer?I start with a character and let that person lead the way. But I?m trying to think about plot more concretely. I?d say the plot is pretty fixed from the inception of a project, but I will probably tweak it two to four times as the story unfolds organically.

4. You run into a bookstore, where do you go first?

These days, the kids? section, LOL! I have two children, so most of the books I buy are for them. But I?m also interested in writing for children?I recently finished a draft of a chapter book/middle grade novel?and the plot came easily! But for me? I usually head to the new general or literary fiction. This whole genre writing (my novel is paranormal fiction) sort of just happened because I decided to write about a witch and make it magickal. I hadn?t read a lot of paranormal, sci-fi, urban fantasy, etc. before writing the book.

5. How many books in a month do you tend to read?

Two or three. I wish I had time for more, but with writing, work, taking care of my kids, I just don?t. If I read something I really enjoy, I will suck it up like sugar through a straw. That?s how it was with The Hunger Games trilogy. I have no problem making time for good writing, excellent plotting, and strong characters!

6. In all the books you've read. Who is your most favorite character and why?

It?s a weird tie between Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice, Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, and my own heroine Memphis Zhang.

7. State 5 random facts about yourself.

I?m mixed race, half Chinese and half Caucasian.
I love chocolate chip cookies.
If I don?t sit on the couch each night and watch TV with my husband after the kids are in bed, I get cranky.
My favorite TV show of all time is Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
I?m a terrible housekeeper.

8. Your favorite Genre?

Probably upmarket fiction.

9. What are you currently reading?

Anya?s War by Andrea Alban, Diary of a Wimpy Kid (with my daughter), and Insatiable by Meg Cabot.

10. What is the best book you've read?

All the works of Jane Austen.

11. Any new projects coming up?

Loads! The aforementioned children?s chapter book, a sequel to The Flower Bowl Spell, a YA prequel to The Flower Bowl Spell, and an upmarket woman?s fiction novel about the romantic adventures of two twentysomething sisters who own a San Francisco tearoom.
